Assyrian Campaigns Against Israel and Samaria, 725 BC

Shalmaneser V – Hoshea, king of Israel, initially paid tribute to Shalimaneser V, but finally rebelled with the promise of Egyptian help (2 Kings 17:1-5). Shalmaneser then besieged Samaria for three years with the city falling in 722 BC.
Sargon II – converted Samaria into an Assyrian province after putting down additional rebellions backed by Egypt and key Philistine cities in 720 BC; exiled 27,000 Israelites and settled them near Nineveh an the region of Samaria
(2 Kings 17:24).
